Adventures of a Spot New Graduate

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY SPEECH & LANGUAGE

It’s hard to believe that a whole year has flown by since I graduated and I began my adventure as a new graduate speech pathologist at Spot Therapy Hub.

The transition from student to professional

Transitioning from the structured academic setting of university to the professional world has been an exciting yet demanding experience. I’ve realised the importance of finding a team that offers strong support, especially through consistent weekly supervision.

SPOT not only understands this crucial need but also boasts a fantastic, approachable team always available to answer any queries, any time of the day. While university provided a familiar environment, stepping into the realm of speech therapy has provided a whole new spectrum of responsibilities and challenges. SPOT shines in providing a safe, nurturing clinical setting where I can apply my knowledge and skills with guidance and support.

Clinical practice

My first year as a graduate speech therapist has been filled with valuable clinical encounters. Working with a diverse range of clients has been enlightening, each presenting in unique ways. These hands-on experiences have allowed me to bridge theory with practice, fostering a deeper understanding of the complexities within speech therapy.

The learning never stops

One key takeaway from this past year is that learning never stops. The graduate program provides a strong foundation for professional development and every day presents opportunities for continuous growth and refinement of skills. Keeping up with the latest research and therapeutic techniques is vital in delivering optimal care for my clients.

SPOT’s internal training platform, organised PD days during the school holidays and SPOT’s social media accounts played an important role in my learning. Kate Broderick, SPOT’s Director with dual qualifications in speech therapy and occupational therapy, is a great source of knowledge, always ready to help with any question, big or small.

Building relationships

Building relationships has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my journey at SPOT. Establishing trust and connection with clients and their families is pivotal in our field, and witnessing the positive impact I can make in someone’s life is extremely fulfilling.

At SPOT, the friendly and supportive atmosphere, combined with the dedication to client-centred care, really resonates with my values. The emphasis on a functional approach to therapy aligns perfectly with my beliefs, making SPOT an incredible place to grow and thrive in this field.
